Barça crowned as Messi and Villa see off United

FC Barcelona 3-1 Manchester United FC
Second-half goals from Lionel Messi and David Villa ended United's challenge at Wembley and earned a fourth European title for Barça.
Just as in 1992, Wembley provided the setting for a Catalan celebration as FC Barcelona turned on the style to beat Manchester United FC 3-1 and claim their fourth European crown. Barcelona were worthy winners, taking the lead through Pedro Rodríguez and responding to Wayne Rooney's equaliser with two superb second-half strikes from Lionel Messi and David Villa.
If Barça's triumph at the old Wembley broke down a barrier with their first European Champion Clubs' Cup, this underlined the Spanish titleholders' status as the continent's dominant force – their third UEFA Champions League in six seasons conferring the stamp of greatness on Josep Guardiola's side. For an outplayed United team, it was a sorry repeat of their Rome defeat by the Blaugrana two years ago. There were dancers with umbrellas in the opening ceremony and even the simulated sounds of a storm but it was on the pitch that lightning eventually struck twice.
For a short while, it looked like things might turn out differently for the English champions. Sir Alex Ferguson selected an attacking formation, resisting the temptation to pack his midfield and instead fielding both Javier Hernández and Rooney in attack.
As in Rome, his team raced out of the blocks, pushing up and aiming to deny Barcelona the time and space to find their stride, and briefly the ploy worked. Barcelona seemed edgy as Hernández hustled a defender into losing the ball on the edge of his area. Javier Mascherano, starting in central defence in place of Carles Puyol with Éric Abidal at left-back, then failed to deal with Edwin van der Sar's punt down the middle, forcing Víctor Valdés into urgent action to deny Rooney.
Inevitably, though, Barça clicked into gear, and they fashioned the first clear opening on the quarter-hour as Xavi Hernández drove in a low cross that Pedro, drifting free of Fabio, turned wide. Barcelona soon had United pinned back as more chances came. Villa flashed a shot narrowly wide before forcing a low save from Van der Sar. A superb Nemanja Vidić challenge then foiled Messi yet, in the 27th minute, United were undone.
Xavi was the architect, advancing into United territory and picking out Pedro with a diagonal pass. The winger's movement had carried him clear of Vidić on the right side of the box and he applied a cool finish, sidefooting the ball into the near corner with Van der Sar wrongfooted.
Amid the many predictions about this contest the general consensus appeared to be that United needed the first goal. However, they responded seven minutes later with a fine equaliser, their first and only attempt on target. After Barcelona had lost the ball from an Abidal throw-in, Rooney surged forward on a one-two with Michael Carrick. He then slipped a pass to Ryan Giggs inside the area and met the Welshman's return ball with a superb curled finish into the far corner.
Sir Alex had anticipated "the final of the decade" and an absorbing first half almost produced another goal when Messi drove forward and after feeding Pedro on the right, was just a whisker away from meeting the return. United's respite was short-lived, though, after Barça resumed control after the restart.

Although Van der Sar saved from Daniel Alves, Messi restored their advantage after 54 minutes, the Argentinian punishing the failure of United's defenders to close him down by sweeping the ball powerfully past Van der Sar from 20 metres. Messi's ensuing explosion of emotion showed just what the goal – his first on English soil but 12th in this season's competition – meant.
The little magician could have had more goals as Barcelona went for the kill. Van der Sar denied him with his legs before Fabio kept out his back-heeled effort with a goal-line block. Van der Sar, on his final appearance, offered a fitting reminder of his class with a full-length dive to foil Xavi yet he had no chance with Villa's third goal after 69 minutes.
Although United stopped Messi's surge into the box, substitute Nani lost out to Sergio Busquets who teed up the Spain striker to curl an exquisite finish into the top corner.

Fourth European Cup is ours! (3-1)

Miquel Pellicer

Barça put in a sublime performance to take their fourth European Cup by beating Manchester United 3-1 at Wembley tonight . Pedro, Messi and Villa were on target to ensure the team repeated the 1992 Wembley success.

Fourth European Cup is ours! (3-1)
Barça again lifted the European Cup at Wembley after a great performance whish saw the Club claim their fourth European Cup. The team repeated the success of 1992, when the Club took its first European Cup and with goals from the great trio of Messi, Villa and Pedro, they brushed aside the challenge of a competitive Manchester United to win 3-1.

The first half saw Barça dominate much more than the scoreline might suggest, with Rooney pegging back Pedro’s opener very much against the run of play. Even so, the first 10 minutes of the game recalled the 2006 final, with United coming out of the blocks the stronger, which Barça answered with some solid defending and a gradual development of their trademark possession football. Valdes showed his worth early on with a punch out when Rooney closed in on a Van der Saar clearance.

Messi-Xavi-Iniesta

After Valdes’ intervention, Barça really began to turn on the style as Xavi, Iniesta and Messi began to combine and there was nothing that Ferguson’s much vaunted tactics could do to stop the trio as they began to put Villa and Pedro into dangerous positions.

Chances aplenty

The chances were coming thick and thin now, with Messi tiptoeing through the sluggish United defence, Villa trying his luck from the edge of the box and finally, Pedro opening the scoring with a well struck shot after receiving a killer pass from Xavi – the Spanish forward’s fifth goal in the Champions League this campaign.

Equaliser spurs Barça on

Despite the Barça domination though, a quick move between Giggs and Rooney saw the England centre forward hit home an equaliser on 34 minutes. That goal just seemed to push the Barça players to even greater control and they had a number of chances to take the lead again before the break, including a great set piece move that nearly undid the English defence.

Two great strikes

If the first half was dominated by Barça, then the second was an even more one sided affair as two great goals on 53 and 69 minutes gave Guardiola’s team a well deserved 3-1 lead. Messi hit home a wonderful strike from outside the box to culminate a lovely team move for the second goal and Villa hit a beautiful curling shot home for the third. It wasn’t just those moments of magic that were doing for United though, it was the almost total control that Barça were showing that was silencing the Manchester fans and leaving their team helpless to respond to Guardiola’s men’s domination.

Back to Wembley and back for a win!

Koeman’s brilliant free kick gave Barça their first European Cup at Wembley in 1992, but it was the collective play of Guardiola’s team that brought the trophy back this time. The win puts a fantastic end to the double winning season and it was achieved with the team’s trademark domination based on their great understanding and control of possession. Make a space in the Museum –the fourth European Cup is on its way back home!

Sedangkan Arsenal, sama sekali belum pernah merasakan gelar Eropa. Prestasi terbaik Arsenal di kompetisi benua biru itu hanya menjadi runner-up tahun 2006.

Inilah hasil dalam lima pertemuan terakhir di ajang Liga Champions:

1.  2010/2011
Kamis, 16 Februari 2011,  Arsenal 2 - 1 Barcelona

2. 2009/2010
Selasa, 6 April 2010, Barcelona 4 - 1 Arsenal
Rabu, 31 Maret 2010, Arsenal     2 - 2 Barcelona

3. 2005/2006
Rabu, 17 Mei 2006,  Barcelona 2 - 1 Arsenal

4. 1999/2000
Selasa, 19 Oktober 1999, Arsenal 2 - 4 Barcelona
Rabu, 29 September 1999, Barcelona 1 - 1 Arsenal
